Best known as the editor-in-chief of 16 Magazine, Stavers also stepped behind the camera, capturing some of the most intimate images of the 1960s.

In 1967, Stavers arranged a feature on The Doors in New York, personally photographing the band for 16. She later invited Jim Morrison to a private shoot at her apartment, resulting in a series of rare, striking portraits.

The first episode of REALLY?? THE DOORS? premieres The first episode of REALLY?? THE DOORS? premieres today, a new podcast which revisits the cultural legacy of The Doors, 60 years after the band first formed.

Hosted by The New Yorker’s Naomi Fry (@frynaomifry), the series brings together a multi-generational group of musicians, writers, and cultural voices to rethink the ideas, controversies, and creative sparks that shaped The Doors’ chaotic legend.

Through conversations with the likes of @billyidol, @theejohndoe, @weyesblood, @lucinda_williams, and more, the show asks how myth overtakes meaning, and what The Doors’ role as provocateurs, “erotic politicians,” and boundary-pushing artists reveals about American culture then and now.

Episode 1 is out now, with new episodes every week through December 17. The sixth and final episode will feature a special conversation with @johndensmore recorded live from On Air Fest at KCRW in Los Angeles, CA.

“They played for about 45 minutes, maybe an hour. I remember they played ‘Light My Fire’ - the long version! They also played ‘Break On Through,’ ‘The Crystal Ship,’ and ‘I Looked At You.’ But one very strange song they did - well, strange for The Doors - was ‘I Got You Babe’ by Sonny and Cher. I couldn’t believe it.” - Don Johnson

Before The Doors became icons, Nettie Peña was there with her camera. A UCLA classmate, she photographed the band during their early days at the London Fog, capturing Morrison, Manzarek, Krieger, and Densmore before fame took hold.

Her images remain some of the only visual records of those formative nights. Peña even made reel-to-reel recordings of the shows, one of which was released as LIVE AT THE LONDON FOG - the second reel has yet to be found.

Hopkins first met the band while on assignment for ROLLING STONE, interviewing Jim Morrison in Los Angeles. Afterward, Jim invited him to rehearsals, giving Hopkins rare access to capture the group outside the spotlight.

In June 1969, Hopkins traveled with The Doors to Mexico City, photographing their legendary run at El Fórum. His candid images documented not only the concerts, but the atmosphere surrounding the band’s time in Mexico.
